in detail

The last of its kind in the city. Leogar is the only blown-glass factory still working in Mexico City. It was founded in 1954 by Leonardo García Olvera, and it still produces between 2,000 and 2,500 pieces a week — glasses, tumblers, jugs, vases — every one of them shaped by hand.

And made from recycled glass. Which is the detail that matters: the whole output is blown from reclaimed material, long before that was a selling point. The characteristic greenish tint and the small bubbles in Mexican blown glass come from exactly that.

Why it is worth seeing rather than just buying. Glassblowing is a performance whether or not anyone intends it to be: the furnace, the gather on the end of the pipe, the shaping while the glass is still moving. Mexico is known for its crafts, and this is one of the few you can watch being made in the capital rather than in a workshop several states away.

Practical notes. The workshop operates on working hours rather than visiting ones, so call before going and ask whether the furnace will be running — there is nothing to see when it is not. Wear closed shoes and keep children close: this is a factory floor, not an exhibit. Pieces are sold on site, and buying directly is both cheaper and better for the workshop than buying the same object in a shop.
