Amargura #5, Col. San Ángel. 01000, San Ángel
What it is. A gourmet market in a remodelled colonial house in San Ángel, built on the model of the covered food markets of Europe and New York: about 25 units over two floors, with food counters, homeware and art galleries sharing the same courtyard. It is one of the reference points for eating in the south of the city.
What to do there. Graze. Each counter does one thing —oysters, tacos, Spanish ham, coffee, wine, desserts— and the normal way to use the place is to order from several and share at a common table. It works equally as a mid-morning coffee stop, a long lunch after the Bazar Sábado, or dinner before going on somewhere.
Practical notes. Amargura #5, a minute from Plaza San Jacinto. Open from 11:00, closing at 21:00 early in the week, 23:00 Thursday to Saturday and 19:00 on Sunday. Prices are well above a traditional market —this is a restaurant destination, not a cheap lunch. Saturday is the busiest day, when the bazaar fills San Ángel; come early or reserve.
