Markets & bazaars, Mexican design, Original boutiques, Fashion, Accessories, Centennial shops
Rayón #54, Col. Morelos. 06200, The North
What it is. The clothing and fabric section of the La Lagunilla complex, one of the most traditional markets in the city: around a thousand stalls specialising in dresses for quinceañeras, weddings, first communions and christenings, along with regional costume and fancy dress. Whole generations of city families have dressed here for their big days.
Why it is worth visiting even if you buy nothing. Because it is a visual spectacle: entire aisles of tulle, sequins and satin, mannequins in two-metre quinceañera skirts, embroidered charro suits and costumes of every kind. It is one of the best places to see how Mexico celebrates.
How to visit. Open every day from 09:00 to 19:00. Haggling is normal, especially if you buy more than one piece, and nearly every stall takes cash only. On Sundays the La Lagunilla street market also takes over the surrounding streets with antiques and second-hand goods, which makes it the best day to combine the two — and the busiest, with everything that implies: carry little and keep your phone away. It is at Rayón #54, colonia Morelos; Metro Lagunilla, line B, and Garibaldi are nearby.
