The market opened in 1958. The highlight is a grand mural by Ariosto Otero from 2008, when it was remodeled.

The mural narrates the story of activities related to trade and popular character from movies, music and visual arts.

The market is popularly known as the San Angel Flower Market for the large variety of flowers sold such as sunflowers, orchids and tulips. Small or very large and elaborate flower arrangements are made. Also on sale are a variety of articles related to gardening plus fruits, vegetables, meats, fish and small restaurants with delicious meals.
