Av. Insurgentes Sur s/n, Col. La Joya 14090, Tlalpan
What it is. A roadside monument on Avenida Insurgentes Sur, at the southern edge of the city in Tlalpan, dedicated to the camineros —the road workers who built and maintain Mexico's highways. It is the kind of mid-century civic sculpture that the city put up along its arterial roads, and for most people it is a landmark rather than a destination: the point where Insurgentes stops being a city avenue and becomes the highway south towards Cuernavaca.
What to expect. Open ground beside a major road, visible from the traffic, free and accessible at any hour. There is no enclosure, no interpretation and no facilities. Go if you are interested in the city's public sculpture or are passing on the way south; do not cross the city for it.
Getting there. Avenida Insurgentes Sur in Colonia La Joya. Metrobús Line 1 runs the length of Insurgentes and is the practical way to reach this stretch; the southern terminals are the closest stops. Take care crossing —this is a high-speed section of the avenue with few pedestrian crossings.
