Hidalgo #289, Col. del Carmen. 04000, Coyoacán
What it is. The shop of the National Museum of Popular Cultures, on Hidalgo in the centre of Coyoacán —and one of the best places in the city to buy Mexican craft without haggling or guessing. What is on the shelves comes from artisan communities across the country, and it is sold with the maker and the technique identified.
What you find. Textiles that take weeks or months to weave, cartonería figures, blown and worked glass made by processes that go back generations, ceramics, lacquerware and toys. Prices are fixed and fair to the makers —higher than a street stall, lower than a design boutique— and that is the point: the shop exists so that the craft is paid for properly.
Combine it with. The museum itself, which it belongs to, and the rest of Coyoacán's museums: the Casa Azul and the Trotsky house are both a ten-minute walk away.
Practical notes. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–20:00 and closed on Monday, like the museum. Cards are accepted. Coyoacán has no metro: Coyoacán and Viveros-Derechos Humanos stations on Line 3 are both about twenty minutes on foot.
