Canal de Miramontes #3011 loc. 9B, Col. Los Girasoles. 04920
What it is. A Mexican restaurant that has been serving on Canal de Miramontes for twenty-six years — the kind of established neighbourhood place that outlasts fashions because it feeds the same families every week.
What to order. The traditional antojitos rather than just tacos: sopes, thick maize discs with a pinched rim, topped with beans, meat, cream and cheese; huaraches, longer and sandal-shaped, which is what the name means; enchiladas; and tacos. This is the category of Mexican food that rarely appears on an international menu and is the heart of what the country actually eats.
Where it puts you. Los Girasoles, in Coyoacán, on the Canal de Miramontes axis in the south of the city. This is residential ground, well away from the visitor circuit, which is the point: the clientele is local.
Practical notes. Canal de Miramontes #3011. No Metro immediately nearby; the Tren Ligero and Metro line 2 reach Taxqueña, with a short taxi from there. Bar service, wi-fi and cards accepted; it also caters for groups.
