What is normally in a catalogue like this. City tours of the historic centre and Chapultepec; Xochimilco and Coyoacán; the museum circuit; and the standard day trips — Teotihuacán with the Basilica, Puebla and Cholula, Taxco and Cuernavaca, Tepoztlán. Transfers and multi-day packages are usually arranged on request.

What is worth paying an operator for. Transport to places that are awkward without a car — Teotihuacán, Tepoztlán, the monarch butterfly sanctuaries — a certified guide for archaeology and muralism, and the logistics of a day with several stops. It is not worth paying to skip queues, which are short here except on Sundays, or for entrance fees, which are inexpensive at the gate.

What to confirm before booking. Exactly what the price includes, the number of shopping stops, the group size, the language of the guide and the real return time. Ask whether the guide is certified by the tourism ministry; for archaeological sites it makes a substantial difference.
