What this is. Games and activities for children about Mexico City — a way into the city's history that works better than a guidebook at that age.
What the games are usually built on. The founding of Tenochtitlan: the Mexica wandered for generations looking for an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent, found it on an island in a lake in 1325, and built a city there. That image is on the Mexican flag and on every coin. The city they built had causeways, canals and chinampas — floating gardens — and the last of those still exist in Xochimilco.
Where to see what the games describe. The Templo Mayor, behind the cathedral, where the main temple is still being excavated. The National Museum of Anthropology, with the Sun Stone and the Coatlicue. The Papalote Museo del Niño in Chapultepec, built around touching things. And a trajinera in Xochimilco, hired by the boat and by the hour.
Practical notes. Most museums close on Mondays and are free or nearly free for children. The Metro is free for under-fives and is the fastest way across the city. Carry water and sun protection at this altitude.
