An earthquake gave rise to the museum, formerly the Old Christ Church, which was the first Anglican cathedral in Mexico. After the collapse caused by the quake, it was decided to make a space for culture and exchange of ideas.
The "American" name was given to the museum because the American Embassy gave money for the removal of debris and the arrangement thereof. Currently there are no any ecclesiastical activities, but there are film series, book presentations, exhibitions and more.
