Cine Villa Olímpica

What it is. A cinema on Avenida Insurgentes Sur in Tlalpan, inside the Villa Olímpica —the housing complex built for the athletes of the 1968 Olympic Games and still one of the landmark modernist developments of the southern city. The programming leans towards art-house and repertory titles rather than blockbusters, which makes it one of the useful screens in the south for anyone who wants Mexican or international auteur cinema.

What to know before booking. Foreign films are listed either as subtitulada (original soundtrack with Spanish subtitles) or doblada (dubbed) —check the label, as it is not always obvious. Tickets at this kind of venue are cheaper than at the big chains, and the audience is largely students from the nearby UNAM campus.

Getting there. On Insurgentes Sur #3493, at the southern end of the Insurgentes corridor. Metrobús Line 1 runs the length of the avenue; the Villa Olímpica and Perisur stops are the closest. By car, allow for heavy traffic on Insurgentes in both rush hours.
