A small chapel for celebrating mass was built here in the 16th century. In the 18th century a group of Spanish businessmen built a cotton textile factory called El Aguila a few meters away from the temple. Thus the church had to be expanded to accomodate workers. On the wall, Manuel Payno Bustamante's stone plaque. He was the father of writer Manuel Payno Flores, author of the book Los Bandidos del Río Frío.
