Laberinto s/n, Col. Ampliación San Miguel Ajusco. 14710, Tlalpan
What it is. Two hectares on the edge of the city dominated by a European-style hedge maze, with walls of clipped shrubs over two metres high — tall enough that you genuinely cannot see your way out.
What it is a copy of. The maze reproduces the one at Hever Castle in Kent, England — the house that belonged to Anne Boleyn's family. Beside it stands a Tudor-style house, which is the other half of the conceit: an English country garden transplanted to the slopes of the Ajusco.
What a visit includes. The maze itself, the house, and optionally the camping area. The grounds have 24-hour security, rooms for an overnight stay and a barbecue area — which is how most Mexican families use it, as a weekend escape rather than a half-hour attraction.
Where you are. The Ajusco is the mountainous southern edge of Mexico City, in Tlalpan, in pine forest above 2,700 metres. It is appreciably colder than the centre, especially after dark.
Practical notes. Open all year; some areas are camping-only and restrictions apply, so call ahead to confirm what is available on your date and what the current rates are. There is no Metro: drive or take a taxi, and arrange the return before going up. Take a jacket, closed shoes and cash.
