The building that houses the Pinacoteca Virreinal was part of the church and convent of San Diego. In 1934 the church was expropriated and put to other uses such as a printing house, cellar and an auditorium for dance and drama classes.
Today is the Laboratorio Arte Alameda, where contemporary art is exhibited and various courses are taught and conferences, book presentations and children's theater, drawing and concert activities are held.
There is a museum and guided tours for school children and the general public are available (also in English and French).
