18:00 - 00:00This edition has finished. The page covers the 2019 Festival Nacional del Globo, a hot-air balloon festival. That edition is past, and the page is kept for reference rather than for planning.
What this kind of festival involves. Balloon festivals are built around two moments: the mass dawn ascent, when dozens of balloons inflate and lift in the first light, and the evening night glow, when tethered balloons fire their burners in the dark. Both depend entirely on the weather, and both start very early or very late in the day.
What to look for instead. Mexico's best-known balloon event is the Festival Internacional del Globo in León, Guanajuato, held every November and reachable from Mexico City in about five hours by coach or an hour by air. Smaller flights operate year-round over Teotihuacán, an hour north of the capital, with dawn departures that land in time to walk the archaeological site before the midday heat.
If you book a balloon flight. Confirm what happens if the weather cancels, how long the flight itself lasts as opposed to the whole excursion, and whether transport from the city is included.
