Francisco I. Madero #17, Col. Centro. 06000, Historic Center
This exhibition has closed. Grandes Maestros del Arte Popular Mexicano, 20 años was shown at the Palacio de Cultura Banamex — Palacio de Iturbide, in the historic centre, and ran from 1 September to 31 May of its year with free admission. It is no longer on display.
What it was. More than 5,000 pieces of folk art by over 800 master craftspeople from across Mexico, drawn from the collection Fomento Cultural Banamex built over two decades: Oaxacan alebrijes and black clay, Michoacán lacquer and copper, Puebla talavera, Guerrero amate, Chiapas textiles, Huichol beadwork.
The building, which is the other reason to go. The Palacio de Iturbide is one of the great eighteenth-century baroque palaces of the city — a vast stone courtyard behind a carved facade on Madero. It hosts free temporary exhibitions through the year and is worth stepping into whatever is on.
Getting there. Francisco I. Madero #17, on the pedestrian street between the Zócalo and the Torre Latinoamericana. Metro Allende and Bellas Artes, line 2. Check the current exhibition before going.
