Motel Los Arcos

What it is. An inexpensive two-star stop on the México–Toluca highway, at kilometre 14.5 in Palo Alto. Rooms carry the basic services and nothing beyond them; staff are reported as helpful. It is priced for people passing through who need somewhere to sleep.

What it is actually for. Road travel. The México–Toluca is the western exit from the city, towards Toluca, its airport and the road on to Valle de Bravo and the monarch butterfly sanctuaries, which receive tens of millions of butterflies in the fir forests between November and March. If you are driving out that way and want to start before dawn, this is on the route.

What you have to accept. This is a highway motel, not a city hotel: there is no neighbourhood around it, no Metro, and the centre of Mexico City is a long way east in heavy traffic. Santa Fe, the corporate district, is the nearest part of the city proper.

What to confirm. Whether they take cards or cash only, whether hot water is available at all hours, parking, and the deposit policy.

Practical notes. Carretera Federal México-Toluca km 14.5, Palo Alto. Hoy No Circula restricts which vehicles may drive on which day, by plate and sticker, and it applies to rental cars.
