El Rincón Cubano

What it is. A Cuban music venue in the Roma: salsa, son and Caribbean rhythms, with live bands and dance shows. It is one of the few places in the city where the floor fills with people who genuinely know how to dance salsa.

How to survive if you do not dance. Nobody expects you to arrive knowing. The early sets tend to be calmer and there are tables from which you can watch the floor; many places of this kind run a class or a warm-up at the start of the night — ask when you book. The local rule is simple: you ask someone to dance, you thank them at the end of the number, and you do not stand on the floor to chat.

Hours, which are unusual. It opens early on Thursdays and from 20:00 to 03:00 on Friday and Saturday, plus Sunday afternoon from 14:00, which is when the die-hard dancers come. Monday to Wednesday it is closed.

Practicalities. Querétaro #300, in the Roma. There is usually a cover charge and a minimum spend; bring cash. Metro Hospital General and Centro Médico are nearby; for the trip back, use an app taxi.
