This season has ended. Buñuel en México was a retrospective cycle at the Cineteca Nacional, in Xoco. It is no longer running, and this page is kept for reference.
What it was about. Luis Buñuel arrived in Mexico in 1946 and took Mexican nationality in 1949; of his thirty-two feature films, twenty-one were made here. Los olvidados (1950), shot in the slums of Mexico City, won him best director at Cannes and is inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World register. The Mexican period is the largest and least-known part of his work.
What the Cineteca does the rest of the time. It is the national film archive and the best cinema in the country: several screens, a bookshop, open-air screenings in the plaza, and a programme of retrospectives and festivals that changes weekly. Tickets are cheap and most films screen in their original language with Spanish subtitles.
Getting there. Av. México Coyoacán #389, colonia Xoco. Metro Coyoacán, line 3, is a short walk. Check the current programme on the day: it changes constantly.
