Tepeyac's cemetery receives the spirit of its deads in late October and early November. This festival is the result of the Mexican syncretism of many colors, petitions and memories.
This event is held every year. The Tepeyac observes Día de Muertos on 1 and 2 November, in the shadow of the Basilica of Guadalupe and the Panteón del Tepeyac, the old cemetery on the hillside.
What happens. Masses for the dead through both days at the Basilica complex, families decorating graves in the old cemetery on the slope, and ofrendas with cempasúchil, candles and copal. The Tepeyac is the most visited religious site in the country, so the atmosphere here combines a family vigil with the constant movement of a pilgrimage site.
What else is on the hill. The Antigua Basílica, the Capilla del Cerrito at the top of the hill, the Jardín del Tepeyac and the viewpoint over the Plaza Mariana — all within the same walled complex, all walkable in an afternoon.
Getting there. Metro La Villa-Basílica, line 6, and Deportivo 18 de Marzo, lines 3 and 6, both a short walk away. On these dates the complex is busy from early morning. Dress for a cold evening, carry cash, and ask before photographing families at the graves.
