What it is. A caving excursion on the Xitle volcano, on the southern edge of Mexico City, sold as a one-night, one-day package.
Why the Xitle. This is the volcano that erupted around 400 CE and buried the city of Cuicuilco — one of the oldest monumental settlements in the valley of Mexico — under a lava field that still covers much of the south of the city. The Pedregal neighbourhoods, the UNAM campus and the Espacio Escultórico all sit on that lava. The caves are lava tubes formed as the flow cooled.
What the package includes. One night and one day; a welcome mezcal; dinner; breakfast; a traditional meal in a cabin; a box lunch; and the caving equipment.
What it does not include. Transport. That is the item to resolve first, since the Ajusco area has no Metro and no straightforward public transport.
Practical notes. This is high ground — above 2,700 metres — and appreciably colder than the centre, especially at night. Closed shoes, a warm layer and gloves. At this altitude exertion is harder for the first days of a trip. Confirm the current price, the dates and what equipment is provided directly with the operator before paying.
