St. Francis' festivity of most famous in Iztacalco, so much, that the neighborhood in which it takes place is called San Francisco Xicaltongo. This saint is noted for his simple, humble life; he was canonized in 1228 and his festivity is celebrated annually on October 4th.
This event is held every year on 4 October, the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Why Francis matters here. The Franciscans were the first religious order to arrive in New Spain — the twelve friars of 1524 — and they founded more pueblos, schools and hospitals in the valley of Mexico than anyone else. Dozens of neighbourhoods across the city still carry his name and keep his day.
What happens. A novena of masses in the nine days before, the principal mass on 4 October, and a procession with the image through the streets. The blessing of animals is a common part of the day, since Francis is their patron: people bring dogs, cats, birds and occasionally livestock to the atrium. Around it: a fair with food and rides, bands, dance groups and fireworks after dark.
Practical notes. The parish publishes the programme a few weeks ahead and the celebration usually runs for several days around the date. Entry is free and the fair runs on cash. Afternoon is the best moment: the procession tends to be early evening and the fireworks late.
