A traditional Catholic celebration in one of the first churches of the Valley of Mexico, which was formerly a monastery of the Franciscan order.
This event is held every year on 29 September, the feast the Roman calendar has shared between the archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael since 1969. Before that reform Gabriel was celebrated on 24 March, and some parishes still keep that older date as well — worth confirming with the parish if you are travelling for it.
What a patronal feast involves. A novena of masses in the nine days before, the principal mass on the day, and a procession with the image of the archangel through the streets. Around it: an atrium dressed with flowers and paper cut-outs, dance groups, bands, a fair with food and rides, and fireworks after dark.
The context. Patronal feasts are the strongest surviving sign that a Mexico City neighbourhood was once a pueblo with its own government and land. They are organised and financed by the mayordomía, a responsibility that passes between households and is often committed to years in advance.
Practical notes. The parish publishes the programme a few weeks ahead. Entry is free, the fair runs on cash, and the fireworks come late. Ask before photographing people.
