This exhibition has closed. The Jaume Plensa show at the Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL) ran from 23 October to 23 February of its year and is no longer on display.
What it was. The first showing in Mexico of Behind the Walls, one of the Catalan sculptor's best-known monumental works: a vast head in white marble, eyes closed, hands covering the face. Plensa is among the most widely exhibited public sculptors working today.
What MUNAL holds permanently. Mexican art from the sixteenth century to 1954, in one of the finest Porfirian buildings in the city — a 1911 palace by Silvio Contri with a marble staircase worth the entry on its own. José María Velasco's valley landscapes are the collection's centrepiece. The equestrian statue of Charles IV, El Caballito, stands in the plaza outside.
Getting there. Tacuba #8, in the historic centre. Metro Allende and Bellas Artes, line 2, are a few minutes away. Closed on Mondays; low admission and free on Sundays for residents. The Palacio de Minería and the Museo Nacional de San Carlos are within walking distance.
