This exhibition has closed. Voces de la tierra. Lenguas Indígenas ran at the Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL) from 8 August to 1 March of its year, as part of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, and is no longer on display.
What it was about. Mexico is one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world: 68 indigenous languages are recognised, grouped into eleven families, with some 350 variants. The exhibition approached that through painting, sculpture, drawing, textiles and photography rather than through linguistics.
Where the subject lives permanently. The Museo Nacional de Antropología, in Chapultepec, devotes its entire upper floor to the living indigenous cultures of Mexico, language by language and region by region — the part of that museum most visitors skip, and the part that answers this question properly.
MUNAL itself. Tacuba #8, in the historic centre: Mexican art from the sixteenth century to 1954 in a 1911 palace. Metro Allende and Bellas Artes, line 2. Closed on Mondays; free on Sundays for residents.
