Marconi #2 loc. 2, Col. Centro. 06010, Historic Center
To make the leap from art contemplation to art exhibition, and enjoying the displayed pieces by yourself, you need guidance. Castillo galleries, "is the only art gallery in the Historical Center that offers art and guidance”, says Ricardo Castillo, the owner's son.
The history of this house began when its founder, Jose Castillo, was employed by a gallery in the Pino Suarez subway passage. Castillo, who is now an art restorer, has spent 50 years gathering the paintings, sculptures and antiques which have formed the gallery’s collection for the past 10 years. Situated in the Historic Center, it first stood in the Iturbide Passageway and last November it was relocated to Marconi Street, next to the imposing National Art Museum.
In Galerías Castillo one can acquire the works of such great names as Rufino Tamayo, Janitzio Escalera, Francisco Toledo, Pedro Friedeberg, Leonardo Nierman and Sebastián. The European art section features pieces such as “Childhood of Gretry” by Faustin Besson, who decorated Napoleon III lodgings and part of the roof of the Palace of Versailles.
But the galleries main quality is its customer service “Everyone who steps in gets a full explanation of the artwork’s history and the techniques, everything”, assured Ricardo Castillo.
