in detail

The Villa de Guadalupe is the main attraction of Gustavo A. Madero. The Basílica de Guadalupe is one of the most important holy places of Catholicism. The second most visited temple in the world after St. Peter's. Each year it receives 40 million visitors between pilgrims and tourists. Every day thousands of people on pilgrimage climb up the Calzada de Guadalupe. They come from all quarters of the city, from all cities and towns in Mexico, and around the world.

In the Cerro del Tepeyac —where Tonantzin was previously worshipped— the Virgen appeared to Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin. Today it houses the Villa de Guadalupe, a complex of religious buildings including the Basilica itself, the Capilla de Indios, the Capilla del Cerrito, the Cementerio del Tepeyac, the Capilla del Pocito, the Temple and former convent of the Capuchin, the Church of Christ the King, the Museo de la Basílica, The Baptistery and the Plaza Mariana.

The Basilica is a modern style building. It was designed to accommodate 10,000 worshipers and so that from any point you can admire the famous and mysterious cloth with the image of the Virgin, which today continues to intrigue the world.
