Barranca del Muerto #309, Col. San José Insurgentes. 03900
What it is. A day spa on Barranca del Muerto, in San José Insurgentes, with a holistic orientation: massage, body treatments, hydrotherapy and an oxygen bar — and, at this branch, a temazcal.
What a temazcal actually is. Not a sauna. It is a pre-Hispanic steam ceremony conducted in a low domed chamber, with volcanic stones, herbs and water, led by someone who guides the session — traditionally a ritual of purification rather than a spa treatment. It is still practised across Mexico and it is worth approaching as a ceremony: ask who leads it, how long it lasts and what the sequence is before booking.
Why a spa makes sense on day one. Mexico City sits at 2,240 metres, and arriving off a long flight hits harder here than at sea level. A massage on the first afternoon genuinely helps with the adjustment — more than it would in a city at sea level.
Practical notes. Barranca del Muerto #309, colonia San José Insurgentes. Metro Barranca del Muerto, line 7, is nearby, and the Insurgentes Metrobús runs close. Treatments are by appointment; weekends fill. Confirm whether steam and sauna access is included with a treatment or charged separately, and mention any health conditions before a temazcal session.
