This exhibition has closed. Tzompantli was shown at the Complejo Cultural Los Pinos, in the first section of the Bosque de Chapultepec, and is no longer on display.
What a tzompantli was. A rack on which the skulls of sacrificial victims were displayed in Mesoamerican cities. The great tzompantli of Tenochtitlan was long known only from colonial chronicles until archaeologists found it in 2015 beside the Templo Mayor, a few metres from the cathedral: a tower of mortared skulls, hundreds of them, men, women and children.
Where to follow the subject up. The Templo Mayor museum, behind the cathedral on the Zócalo, displays finds from the excavation and explains the site; the Museo Nacional de Antropología covers the Mexica world as a whole in its Sala Mexica.
Los Pinos itself. The presidential residence until 2018, open to the public since then with free entry, a changing exhibition programme and extensive gardens. Parque Lira s/n; Metro Constituyentes, line 7. Closed on Mondays.
