in detail

This exhibition has closed. Las dos Fridas. Historia de dos ciudades was a temporary show at the Museo de Arte Moderno, in the Bosque de Chapultepec. It has ended — but the painting at its centre has not gone anywhere.

The painting itself is still here. Las dos Fridas, Frida Kahlo's 1939 double self-portrait and the largest canvas she ever painted, belongs to the Museo de Arte Moderno and is normally on permanent display in its galleries. It was painted in the year of her divorce from Diego Rivera, and the two seated figures — one in Tehuana dress, one in a European wedding gown, their hearts exposed and joined by a single artery — are the best-known image in Mexican modern art.

What else is in the building. The national twentieth-century collection: Tamayo, Siqueiros, Orozco, Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, plus the sculpture garden outside and a temporary programme that changes several times a year.

Getting there. Paseo de la Reforma s/n, first section of Chapultepec. Metro Chapultepec, line 1. Closed on Mondays; free on Sundays for residents. Confirm the painting is on show before travelling specifically for it, since works occasionally travel.
