This run has ended. El choro que marea was a stand-up show at Foro Shakespeare, Zamora #7 in the Condesa. The season is over, though the venue programmes comedy regularly.
What the title means. Choro is Mexican slang for talk that goes on and on — waffle, spiel, patter — and marear is to make someone dizzy. The phrase is roughly "the spiel that makes your head spin", which is a fair description of the format: one performer, a microphone and an hour.
What to expect. Mexican stand-up is performed in Spanish and leans hard on local reference: politics, the Metro, neighbourhoods, family, the particular absurdities of living in a city of twenty million. There are no surtitles and the pace is fast.
Finding a show now. Foro Shakespeare and a cluster of small venues in the Condesa, the Roma and the centre run comedy several nights a week, announcing line-ups a week or two in advance. Expect a cover charge plus a minimum spend; shows start around 20:00 or 21:00.
Getting there. Metro Chapultepec and Juanacatlán, line 1, and Patriotismo, line 9. For the trip home, use an app taxi.
