This workshop season has ended. The danzón workshop was held at Museo Anahuacalli, Museo #150, San Pablo Tepetlapa, in the south of the city. Confirm the current programme with the museum before travelling for a class.
What danzón is. A Cuban dance that reached Mexico through Veracruz at the end of the nineteenth century and became a national institution, with its own etiquette: couples dance upright and measured, pause during the musical interludes, and dress for it. It is danced publicly every Saturday on the Zócalo and in squares across the city, by people who have been doing it for fifty years.
What the Anahuacalli is. Diego Rivera's own building: a windowless volcanic-stone temple he designed to house his collection of some 50,000 pre-Hispanic pieces, finished after his death. The mosaic ceilings, the lava walls and the roof terrace with its view of the Ajusco make it one of the strangest and best buildings in Mexico City — and one of the least visited.
Getting there. Tren Ligero to Xotepingo, then a short walk or taxi. Closed on Mondays. It pairs naturally with the Frida Kahlo Museum, which sells combined tickets.
