This run has ended. Verdades, patrañas y risas was staged at Foro Shakespeare, Zamora #7 in the Condesa, and the season is over.
What the title promises. "Truths, tall tales and laughs" — a storytelling-and-comedy format in which the line between what happened and what is being embroidered is the joke. It is a long-standing Mexican stage tradition, closer to the carpa variety theatre of the early twentieth century than to imported stand-up.
Where that tradition lives now. The carpa is where Cantinflas came from, and its descendants are visible across the city's small venues: cabaret-political theatre, storytelling nights, the comedy programmed by Foro Shakespeare and the Centro Cultural José Martí.
Practical notes. Performances are in Spanish without surtitles and depend heavily on local reference. Seasons usually run Thursday to Sunday for a few weeks; venues publish them a week or two ahead. Expect a cover charge and, in bar venues, a minimum spend. Metro Chapultepec and Juanacatlán, line 1, and Patriotismo, line 9.
